“I paint the world I see around me. Film and the energy of my family and friends inspire me. I believe that “coming of age” is not restricted to adolescence. I am interested in the concept of joy as an act of resistance. Often, imaginary scenes from the places I have been and the people I have met, seep into my work. My love of color makes my work pop, and my use of drawn graphite creates a defined rhythm that is unique to each piece. Most importantly, children inspire me in my portraits because of their natural ability to break boundaries, defy stereotypes, and embrace the simple things in life.” – Mary Cosh
